Dirt-catching zone
In the operation of a building with heavy traffic load, the lack of a dirt catching zone of appropriate size and quality can lead to serious problems.
This is the area that shall catch dirt and wet from outside the building before those entering the building would bring it in under any weather conditions.
Dirt catching zones have 3 elements in an ideal case, all of which have different functions, carpets of different structural build-up, extremely high loadability and durability.
You can find pictures of OBEX and AtriumPlus carpets in the followings that fulfil extreme demands in dirt catching – cleaning zones produced by Milliken, these are to be widely used.
The application of the proper dirt catching system shall be considered at the design of the building. Main points of choosing the right system:
- The expected traffic load
- The facilities of the environment of a building
- The facilities and functions of the foreground of a building

Carpets of the first area in a dirt-catching zone of a building with extremely heavy traffic and dirt load must be completely permeable from above downwards. The place of these extremely high durability carpets with 2-4 cm width has to be left out right at the preparation of the underlay. In case of outdoor application placing a water-course underneath the carpet is by all means reasonable, while for indoor application it is advisable.
The main function of the first zone is removing larger contamination and pieces of snow and mud deposited on shoes.

The second zone that can mainly be found in windbreaks fulfils the function of catching wet and further contamination brought by entrants. As in each and every zone on the line of bearing, the carpet shall be placed in a way that all entrants have to take at least two steps on it.

The third, innermost zone, in an ideal case is not exposed to heavy load of dirt; its main function is simply removing the remainder wet from treads. These carpets are characteristically lighter in their structure, largely hygroscopic, closed from below.
When making a decision about the colour of the cleaning zone, we can choose from Milliken’s range of dirt-bearing colours the one that best matches with the colours of the building.

In case of buildings with no proper cleaning zones, we have solutions that can be placed on top of the existing cover.

We offer unique solutions for indoor use.
